Dr Cheng Hiang Lee

Dr Cheng Hiang LEE MB BCh BAO DipPaed (UNSW) FRACP, is a consultant paediatric and adolescent gastroenterologist who performs endoscopic procedures in children. He is holding a staff specialist appointment at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Dr Lee joined Macquarie GI clinic in early 2016 and brought with him expertise in paediatric gastroenterology and hepatology to Macquarie University Hospital.

Dr Lee graduated from Queens University Belfast in Northern Ireland. He was trained at the prestigious Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast and Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children before migrating to Sydney where he continued his paediatric training in various hospitals in the Sydney Children’s Hospital’s network located in NSW and ACT. Subsequently, Dr Lee undertook specialist training in paediatric gastroenterology at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. This includes fellowship training in paediatric liver transplantation at the Australian National Liver Transplant Unit. He was admitted as a Fellow of Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2012.

Dr Lee is a recipient of the Australian Postgraduate Award for exceptional research potential to pursue Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at the University of Sydney. Under the mentorship of Prof Kevin Gaskin, Prof Rupert Leong and Prof Ralph Nanan, Dr Lee has developed a special interest in Very Early Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease (VEOIBD). Dr Lee and his international collaborators were instrumental in the discovery and understanding of several genetic mutations that leads to VEOIBD (TRIM22 and IL 10).

Dr Lee’s scope of practice includes the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal disorder in children such as coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), gastroesophageal reflux disease, failure to thrive, rectal bleeding and undifferentiated abdominal pain. Dr Lee performs paediatric oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (upper GI endoscopy) and colonoscopy at the state-of-the-art Macquarie University Hospital.

Dr Lee is proficient in English, Mandarin and Malay. He would gladly receive referrals from GPs and specialists.
